NASS 2023 Buzz Report

NASS 2023 was a game-changer, where the pulse of spinal healthcare quickens with every step. Emerging trends are redefining the landscape, from the remarkable rise in robotic navigation, pioneering carbon fiber implants, and the integration of AI and AR to elevate surgical precision and predict outcomes. Not to be overlooked is the growing demand for minimally invasive procedures in Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASC), reflecting a profound shift towards patient-centric care and accelerated recoveries. We cover some of the biggest takeaways from this year’s NASS Annual Meeting below!

Aurora Spine & Pain

Aurora Spine’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of spinal healthcare was evident at NASS 2023. Their innovative solutions not only garnered recognition but also instilled confidence among medical professionals and patients alike. With their award-winning technologies including the award-winning zip™, SiLO TFX™, and DEXA-C™ Technology – winner of the “Best Technology in Spine” award for 2022, Aurora Spine continues to lead the way in redefining the future of spine health, offering hope and improved quality of life to countless individuals worldwide.

Cerapedics Inc.

Cerapedics i-FACTOR Bone Graft is reshaping bone healing. Supported by solid evidence and exceeding regulatory standards, this advanced biologic accelerates natural healing. Key advantages include a unique formula for accelerated healing including P-15 Osteogenic Cell Binding Peptide + inorganic bone mineral, precise activation that targets specific cells preventing unwanted growth and high level convenience being sterilized, room temperature storage and ready to use.

Arthrex

This October, Arthrex launched their Arthrex Endoscopic Spine. Arthrex has pioneered arthroscopic surgery technology with more than 20,000 revolutionary arthroscopic and orthobiologics products that allow surgeons to treat joint pathology in the least invasive way possible—as an outpatient procedure. With this launch, Arthrex will apply accumulated experience and expertise to revolutionize endoscopic and orthobiologics procedures for the spine.

MiRus™

MiRus has received US FDA 510(k) clearance for the narrowest and thinnest plating systems of any plate on the global spine market, CYGNUS MoRe Anterior Cervical Plate and the MiRus 3DR Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion System with Integrated MoRe plate fixation. The proprietary molybdenum-rhenium alloy used in the Integrated MoRe Lateral Plate enables a dramatically smaller footprint with a tapered thickness of 2mm without compromising performance. In a lateral spinal fusion approach, where there is little space or void around the critical structures of the nerves and psoas, there is a significant clinical benefit to a plate that is 40-60% thinner than plates currently on the market. The Integrated MoRe Lateral Plate won the 2023 Spine Technology Award for its clinical relevance, clinical problem solving and potential to improve patient outcomes.

Relievant Medsystems, Inc.

The Intracept Procedure is the only targeted way to relieve vertebrogenic chronic low back pain (CLBP). This same-day procedure performed in an outpatient surgery center is implant-free and preserves the overall structure of the spine. The Intracept Procedure involves heating the basivertebral nerve with a radiofrequency probe to stop it from sending pain signals to the brain. Patients are under anesthesia, and the procedure generally lasts an hour. Different from other nerves in the body that regenerate, the BVN has not shown an ability to grow back as a pain-transmitting nerve following the Intracept Procedure.

SPINEVISION

Crafted from titanium using advanced 3D printing, SpineVision’s Hexanium TLIF Cage implant ensures rock-solid integration and optimal bone growth. Its unique honeycomb design reduces subsidence risk, offering surgeons unmatched precision, allowing patients to experience swift recovery and lasting results.

Spine Wave, Inc.

Spinewave’s Salvo Spine System cutting-edge technology combines innovation and precision to deliver exceptional patient outcomes. With its state-of-the-art design, Salvo ensures seamless integration, optimal stability, and reduced recovery times. Say goodbye to limitations and embrace a future of pain-free mobility and restored vitality with Spinewave’s Salvo Spine System.

SurGenTec (Boca Raton, FL)

SurGenTec proudly announced the FDA clearance for TiLink-P this month, a groundbreaking minimally-invasive implant designed to bring hope to those suffering from chronic sacroiliac (SI) joint pain. TiLink-P introduces a revolutionary approach by combining compression across the sacroiliac joint with a posterior implantation method. This unique technology empowers physicians to stabilize the painful area, offering patients a genuine chance at healing. What sets TiLink-P apart is its minimally invasive nature—requiring only one small incision and one integrated implant. This is a stark contrast to current methods involving multiple incisions and bulky implants, streamlining the entire surgical process.

Xtant Medical

In recent years, Xtant Medical has dramatically expanded their product portfolio, most notably with the introductions of the highly popular OsteoFactor and OsteoVive Plus products and the newly added Coflex and CoFix products. Spinal surgeons and physicians recognize the critical patient benefits from their complementary biologics and fixation product offerings.

Augmedics

Augmedics has embarked upon an incredible journey since last year’s NASS. They’ve proudly treated over 4,500 patients with their #xvision technology, redefining what’s possible in the realm of surgical precision and patient care. Augmedics also introduced new posterior cervical and iliosacral indications, broadening the scope of their impact. The company remains at the forefront of integrating AI to enhance visuals, ensuring surgeons have unparalleled clarity during every critical moment. They’ve bolstered their AR/AI portfolio with the strategic acquisition of Surgalign/Holo Surgical IP & digital health assets.

VUZE Medical Ltd.

Vuze Medical showcased their next generation software-based guidance system for spine surgery following FDA Filing of their latest technology. The VUZE System is a software solution installed on an off-the-shelf PC. It operates with unmodified surgical tools, requires no markers, references or cameras, and with no need for 3D imaging within the operating room (OR). Using proprietary image processing, it overlays in real time graphical representations of standard surgical tools seen in intra-operative 2D X-ray images onto axial and sagittal cross-sections that it generates from the patient’s standard pre-operative 3D scan.

Premia Spine

Premia Spine’s newest FDA approved TOPS System is a revolutionary implant designed to bring back life’s natural rhythms after lumbar decompression surgery. The TOPS System, attached to the spine with precision, not only stabilizes the lower back but also preserves vital motions like bending, twisting, and flexing. It’s a marvel of engineering, allowing for a dynamic range of motion while providing the necessary support for your body’s weight. The TOPS System is not just an implant; it’s a ticket to freedom, ensuring you can live life to the fullest post-surgery.
