The path here

Fills most often

  • Territory and field sales
  • Clinical specialists and education
  • Sales leadership (RSM, director, VP)
  • Regulatory, quality and clinical affairs

I served 20 years in the US Army as an aviation officer and helicopter pilot. For sixteen of those years I was in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment and on other special operations assignments. I deployed eight times to Iraq and Afghanistan as part of special operations task forces, conducting combat operations in support of national objectives, alongside numerous other deployments globally supporting US and partner special operations teams.

A search worth describing

A compliance role that had never existed, filled in eight weeks

I ran a search for a start-up DME company that needed a Director of Healthcare and Privacy Compliance. The position did not exist inside the roughly 60-person company, and the work had always been outsourced to a third party. The hiring manager was the CFO and had a hard time narrowing the candidate profile. They wanted compliance experience in healthcare but also the start-up mentality that fitted their culture, and the person needed to live in Denver because the role was hybrid. Inside eight weeks, after a handful of interviews, I found them a candidate who had consulted for start-ups in exactly their situation, and she agreed to join as a full-time employee.

A point of view

What most people get wrong

  • The belief

Good candidates have to come from the hiring manager's specific background or space.

    The reality

Good candidates adapt and pick up what they do not know, usually quickly. Humans are adaptable, and the good ones succeed more on their intangibles than their hard skills.
