Vascular Access and Infusion Therapy recruiting and talent strategy.
Vascular access is bought as a category rather than a procedure. Decisions run through supply chain, value analysis and infection prevention, with vascular access teams and infusion nursing as the clinical voice, and contracts often cover a whole system for years. High-volume manufacturing, quality, pump and software engineering and clinical education at scale matter as much as conversions.

Inside vascular access and infusion therapy.
A search usually sits in one of these areas, and often spans two or three.
Central access
Central venous catheters, PICCs and tunneled lines, together with the ultrasound and tip location systems used to place them. Catheter materials, imaging and tip location engineering, and in-servicing vascular access teams all bear on infection rates and dwell time.
- Catheter Design Engineer
- Ultrasound Engineer
- Clinical Education Specialist
- Strategic Account Manager
Peripheral access
Peripheral IV catheters, extended dwell catheters and midlines, including safety engineered designs. Volume is very high, so molding and automation engineering, quality and supply reliability matter alongside trials on units and training nurses across shifts.
- Automation Engineer
- Quality Engineer
- Clinical Specialist
- Account Manager
Ports
Implanted ports used for chemotherapy, long term infusion and repeated blood draws, placed by interventional radiology or surgery. Port and catheter design, biocompatibility testing and the procedural relationship all shape a category with real physician preference.
- R&D Engineer
- Biocompatibility Specialist
- Clinical Specialist
- Territory Sales Representative
Infusion safety
Infusion pumps and the dedicated administration sets, drug libraries and dose error reduction software that run on them. Pump, firmware, interoperability and cybersecurity engineering build the platform, and pharmacy, clinical informatics and implementation follow the decision.
- Firmware Engineer
- Cybersecurity Engineer
- Clinical Implementation Manager
- Strategic Account Executive
Needle-free connectors
Needle-free connectors, disinfection caps and prefilled flush syringes, evaluated on their contribution to bloodstream infection prevention and on reliable use. Fluid path design, microbiology testing and prefilled syringe manufacturing sit behind the infection prevention data and unit-level trials.
- Product Development Engineer
- Microbiologist
- Clinical Consultant
- Corporate Accounts Manager
Where vascular access and infusion therapy searches go wrong.
The assumptions that cost the most time, and what tends to be true instead.
“A good device rep will adapt to a commodity category”
Access and infusion products are bought on contract by supply chain and value analysis, not case by case at the bedside. The commercial hire who wins here builds a business case on infection rates and standardization, manages a long conversion across many units, and holds the agreement at renewal. Candidates who have lived on physician preference often find no lever to pull.
“Clinical educators are support staff, not a hire that moves the business”
A conversion in this category is finished by nurses on every shift, and it fails when the new connector or catheter is used incorrectly and the trial data goes flat. Clinical education roles carry that outcome, and treating them as a service cost is the common reason a signed agreement never converts to volume.
“High-volume products don't need senior engineering and quality leadership”
Billions of units leave little room for error: a small defect rate becomes a recall, and a cost change of cents decides a national contract. Infusion pumps add software and cybersecurity obligations on top. Companies that staff engineering, quality and operations leadership lightly because the products look simple tend to pay for it in field actions.
“The most experienced candidate in the therapy area is the safest hire.”
Most companies default to the most experienced candidate, assuming experience equals execution. Early-stage and growth-stage MedTech needs builders, not maintainers, and those are rarely the same person.
