Radiation Oncology and Radiotherapy recruiting and talent strategy.
Radiotherapy is a capital business. A linear accelerator or planning system is bought by a committee that includes radiation oncology, medical physics, facilities and finance, and the cycle runs long. Physics, accelerator and software engineering, applications training and field service carry as much revenue and risk as the machine, so nearly every role here is technical as well as commercial.

Inside radiation oncology and radiotherapy.
A search usually sits in one of these areas, and often spans two or three.
External beam
Linear accelerator treatment delivered over a fractionated course, with the vault, shielding and downtime that come with it. Accelerator, imaging and control software engineering, applications training and service all shape a decision in which medical physics can stop a purchase that radiation oncology wants.
- Accelerator Engineer
- Medical Physicist
- Clinical Applications Specialist
- Field Service Engineer
Brachytherapy
Radiation delivered from a source placed in or beside the tumor, most often in prostate, cervical and skin cases, using an afterloader, applicators and consumables. Source handling, regulatory licensing and a physicist present for cases make engineering, compliance and clinical support central.
- Radiation Safety Officer
- Product Development Engineer
- Clinical Applications Specialist
- Territory Manager
Proton and particle therapy
Proton and carbon ion centers are construction projects as much as equipment purchases, financed over years and justified on a catchment modeled before the first patient is treated. Accelerator physics, project management and service operations run from feasibility through build and into years of uptime.
- Accelerator Physicist
- Project Director
- Regional Service Manager
- Business Development Director
Treatment planning and QA
Planning systems, dosimetry tools and machine quality assurance, used by medical physics and dosimetry rather than the physician. Dose calculation algorithms, interoperability with the accelerator and validation burden decide adoption, so software engineering and physics talent lead the work.
- Dose Algorithm Engineer
- Software Engineer
- Medical Dosimetrist
- Technical Account Manager
Adaptive and MR-guided radiotherapy
Replanning on the treatment couch using MR or cone beam imaging, so the plan follows anatomy that moved since simulation. Imaging physics, real-time software and clinical research build the case, and adoption changes the department's staffing model.
- MR Physicist
- Real-Time Software Engineer
- Clinical Research Scientist
- Field Clinical Engineer
Radiosurgery
Single session or few fraction delivery of a high dose to a small target, used in brain metastases, functional indications and selected spine and lung disease. Precision engineering, physics support and referral relationships with neurosurgery let a center treat confidently.
- Precision Mechanical Engineer
- Medical Physicist
- Medical Science Liaison
- Clinical Specialist
Where radiation oncology and radiotherapy searches go wrong.
The assumptions that cost the most time, and what tends to be true instead.
“Sell the machine and the service revenue follows”
Service, applications and upgrade revenue outlast the capital sale, and a department renews on uptime and on how the applications team behaved during commissioning. Hiring only closers leaves an installed base that's hard to hold. The organization needs field engineers, physicists and applications specialists who can support an account for years.
“Software engineers from other industries can build planning systems”
Treatment planning and QA software calculates dose delivered to patients, so algorithms, validation and change control carry real clinical risk and regulatory scrutiny. Strong engineers from other fields often need medical physics partners to be effective. Teams move fastest when physics and software expertise sit together from the start.
“Capital experience from any specialty transfers directly”
Some of it does. The part that doesn't is medical physics, because a physicist evaluates commissioning workload, dosimetric performance and QA burden, and can block a purchase the radiation oncologist supports. Leaders and commercial hires from capital imaging often adapt well; people from disposables businesses tend to struggle with a cycle that produces a few decisions a year.
“Paying a premium for A+ talent is not worth it.”
Paying 20% above market will almost always return five to ten times that, provided you have the right person.
Danny Syring, Sr. Talent Director
“The ideal candidate already holds this exact title, at this kind of company, in this therapeutic area, and will take it for less than they earn now.”
The best markers are whether someone has repeatedly sold into the same call points, navigated a complex sale and its failures, built a territory, launched new technology, or can point to real examples of building champions for a product. Then listen for ownership: candidates who talk in I, me and my rather than passing the blame to they, them and theirs.
