Infectious Disease and Infection Prevention recruiting and talent strategy.
Heidi HerrickExecutive Talent Director
Infection prevention is bought by committees rather than physicians. Sterile processing leaders, infection preventionists, pharmacy and value analysis all weigh in, and the business case is usually avoided infections and avoided penalties rather than new revenue. Products have to hold up to surveyors and to microbiology, so R&D, regulatory, quality, clinical education and economic selling all carry weight.

Inside infectious disease and infection prevention.
A search usually sits in one of these areas, and often spans two or three.
Sterilization and reprocessing
Steam and low-temperature sterilizers, washers, chemical indicators, tray systems and the tracking software that documents every cycle. Sterile processing and infection prevention are both accountable to surveyors, so validated performance, process engineering and documented compliance matter as much as the sale.

Antimicrobial technologies
Coatings, impregnated materials and surface treatments applied to catheters, sutures, implants and hard surfaces to suppress bacterial colonization. Claims are tightly bounded by what was cleared, so materials science, microbiology testing and regulatory strategy define what the product can say before value analysis weighs the price.

Rapid infectious disease diagnostics
Panels and single-target assays that identify respiratory, gastrointestinal and bloodstream pathogens during the patient encounter, often run near the patient. Demand swings with season and outbreaks, so assay development, manufacturing scale-up and forecasting matter as much as linking a faster result to a changed treatment decision.

Hospital-acquired infection prevention
Products and programs aimed at central line, catheter-associated urinary tract and surgical site infections, spanning dressings, disinfection caps, environmental cleaning and bundle compliance tools. Infection preventionists own the protocol but rarely the budget, so clinical evidence, health economics and a quality or finance sponsor all matter.

Sepsis
Early detection tools, biomarkers and treatment protocols built around recognizing deterioration before organ failure. Adoption is a protocol change across the emergency department, floors and intensive care, which puts algorithm development, clinical validation and implementation support at the heart of the offer.

Where infectious disease and infection prevention searches go wrong.
The assumptions that cost the most time, and what tends to be true instead.
“Physician preference drives this purchase”
Infection prevention purchases move through value analysis, infection control and sterile processing, and a surgeon's enthusiasm rarely survives that review without an economic argument. The commercial hire who succeeds can build a cost-avoidance case, work a committee calendar and keep a protocol in place after launch.
“Any microbiologist can lead product development here”
Antimicrobial and sterilization claims are among the most scrutinized in MedTech, and test methods, labeling and validation have to stand up to regulators and surveyors. Scientists without regulated product experience can generate strong data that doesn't support a clearable claim. Look for R&D leaders who have taken an antimicrobial or sterilization claim through submission.
“Outbreak demand justifies building the organization fast”
Respiratory and outbreak-driven volume rises and falls with the season, and a field, manufacturing or support organization sized to a peak becomes a cost problem in the trough. Leaders who have run through a full cycle tend to build on a base business of hospital-acquired infection and sterile processing work, with surge capacity covered flexibly.
